The trunk of the palm tree.. an architectural masterpiece awaiting the launch of Gulf 25
The Basra International Stadium, which is located in the Sports City and is called the Trunk of the Palm because its design is inspired by the palm tree that the ancient city is famous for, is a distinguished architectural masterpiece. The stadium, which has a capacity of more than 65,000 spectators, was opened as the largest stadium in Iraq in 2013.
The stadium is located within the Sports City, whose construction began in 2009, at a cost of $550 million. In addition to the Palm Trunk Stadium, it includes another stadium with a capacity of 10,000 spectators, in addition to 4 training fields, an Olympic swimming pool with a capacity of 10,000 spectators, and 8 residential buildings for visitors, and 5-star hotels, a polo field, and a 150-meter-high tower, in addition to a youth village, a sports medicine hospital, tennis courts, and experimental complexes. It also contains a car park that can accommodate 10,000 cars.
The Basra stadium hosted many friendly matches for the Lions of Mesopotamia against the teams of Jordan, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Syria, Palestine. It also hosted the confrontation between Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya Club and Atyn Asir Al-Turkmani Club in the AFC Cup in 2018, and the confrontation between Iraq and Hong Kong in the World Cup qualifiers.
The first international match hosted by the stadium was on the first of June 2017 between Iraq and Jordan, and it ended with Iraq progressing with the goal of Alaa Abdel Zahra. The stadium also hosted the Iraq Stars and World Stars match on September 9, 2017, and it ended 4/5 in favor of the world stars.
The Basra International Stadium is fully prepared and ready to host the Gulf 25 confrontations, which will start with the opening meeting between Iraq and Oman on the sixth of next January.
