From memory.. the fifth Gulf Cup and the crowning of Iraq with its first title

Today marks the anniversary of the opening of the Arabian Gulf Cup, which was held in Iraq from March 23, 1979 to April 9, 1979, with the participation of 7 teams, Kuwait – Iraq – Saudi Arabia – Bahrain – Oman – Emirates – Qatar. All matches were held at Al Shaab International Stadium. They won the first title in their second consecutive participation after being runner-up in his first appearance.

70 goals were scored during 21 matches in the championship, and in May 1977 a proposal was put forward during a meeting of representatives of the Gulf football federations in the Emirates to hold the session every three years, as the previous sessions were held every two years, and the UAE was scheduled to host this session, but it apologized due to the reason that the sports facilities were incomplete, and the Iraqi player Hussein Saeed won the title of top scorer with ten goals, as well as scoring the second fastest goal in the history of all Gulf tournaments after thirty seconds of the match that brought his team together with Qatar.

And the award for the best Iraqi goalkeeper was given to Raad Hamoudi, who almost equaled the number of Ahmed Trabelsi, as Mahboub Jumaa, the Kuwait national team player, managed to score an own goal.

The Kuwait national team ranked second, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ranked third.
