Saudi Arabia has its eye on the Asian Cup title

Saudi Arabia will be on a mission to end the long wait for the Asian Cup title again, through the Qatar 2023 edition.

The draw for the tournament placed the Saudi team, three-time Asian Cup champion, in Group Six, facing the teams of Thailand, Kyrgyzstan and Oman.

This will be Saudi Arabia’s 11th appearance in the Asian Cup, and the Saudi Greens have not missed the continental tournament since their first appearance in 1984. Only Iran (49) has played more matches in the continental tournament since its first appearance than Saudi Arabia (48).

Saudi Arabia won its second Asian Cup title when Qatar hosted the 1988 edition, where the West Asian team beat South Korea on penalties in the final.

Saudi Arabia will be determined to return to the top of Asian football, having won their last Asian Cup title in 1996.

Saudi Arabia has the longest streak in Asian Cup history without a tie, a streak that currently extends to 15 matches (along with Qatar).

Salem Al-Dosari is the player who participated in the largest number of matches in the Asian Cup among the current generation of Saudi players. After playing six matches, he comes alongside Walid Abdullah and Fahad Al-Muwallad. However, Mohammed Al-Khelaiwi remains the Saudi record holder with 15 matches in the continental championship.
