The 10th Gulf Cup: The host Blue is crowned champion for the seventh time
These days coincide with the anniversary of the State of Kuwait hosting the tenth Gulf Cup tournament from February 21 to March 9, 1990, when Al-Sadaqa Al-Salam Stadium hosted the opening ceremony under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait, and the stadium itself was the stage for all the championship matches.
The tournament witnessed a number of surprises, and the beginning was with the Saudi Green, which withdrew before the start of the tournament because of its objection to the tournament logo. While the second surprise was the withdrawal of the Rafidain Lions after their match with the Emirati Al-Abyad, in protest of the referee’s expulsion of Captain Adnan Darjal to cross out the results of its three matches in the tournament.
And became the tenth session of the Arab Gulf Cup, with the participation of only five teams are Kuwait, Oman, UAE, Bahrain and Qatar, after the withdrawal of Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
Host Kuwait opened the first tournament matches with a 1-0 victory over Bahrain.10 matches were played, five of which ended in a draw.
The tournament witnessed the scoring of 21 goals, the first of which was the goal of Kuwaiti Wael Suleiman against Bahrain, and the last of which was Kuwait’s goal also by Wael Nassar against the Emirates. The tournament also witnessed ten yellow cards and three expulsions.
At the end of the tournament, the Kuwaiti Blue was crowned with the championship title for the seventh time in its history, led by Brazilian coach Luis Felipe Scolari, and the Qatari team came as runners-up, while the third place went to the Bahrain team, and the fourth place to the Oman team.
At the level of individual awards, Kuwaiti player Mohammed Ibrahim was able to win the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, Emirati Nasser Khamis won the best player award in the tournament, and Bahraini goalkeeper Hamoud Sultan and Kuwaiti Samir Saeed shared the award for best goalkeeper in the tournament.
