The Qatari Federation appoints Spaniard Lopez as coach of the first football team
The Qatari Federation announced the appointment of Spaniard Marques Lopez, coach of Al Wakrah Club, as supervisor of the first team, succeeding Portuguese Carlos Queiroz.
Lopez’s appointment comes as Qatar prepares to participate in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, which will be held at home, where it will play the first match against Lebanon on January 12, in Group 1, which also includes Tajikistan and China.
The Qatari Federation had previously announced the departure of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, who took over the task of coaching the Qatari national team last February, succeeding former Spanish coach Felix Sanchez.
Queiroz supervised the team in 11 matches, during which it achieved 4 victories compared to 3 draws and three losses. Among the team’s victories was victory in two matches in the first group in the second round of the joint Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
