The Kuwaiti national team defeated Malaysia in the U-23 Asian Cup in the last round
The Kuwait national team defeated Malaysia 2-1 on Tuesday at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, in the third and final round of Group Four competitions in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024.
Salman Al-Awadhi (45 + 14 from a penalty kick) and Talal Al-Qaisi (60) scored Kuwait’s goals, while Hakimi Azim Rosli (63) scored Malaysia’s goal.
The two teams completed the match with ten players after Malaysian goalkeeper Sheikh Azhan Nazril was sent off in the 45th minute, and Kuwait striker Salman Al-Awadhi was sent off in the 84th minute.
Uzbekistan topped the group standings with 9 full points from three matches, compared to 6 points for Vietnam and 3 for Kuwait, while Malaysia remained devoid of points, as Uzbekistan and Vietnam obtained the qualifying cards from the group to the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals, Uzbekistan will meet Saudi Arabia, second in Group three, while Vietnam will meet Iraq, first in Group three.
On Wednesday, the first round of group competitions witnessed Vietnam defeating Kuwait 3-1, and Uzbekistan defeating Malaysia 2-0.
On the other hand, the second round, which was held on Saturday, witnessed Uzbekistan defeating Kuwait 5-0, and Vietnam defeating Malaysia 2-0.
It is noteworthy that the teams that finished in the three places in the tournament qualify to represent the Asian continent in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, while the fourth-place team will move on to compete in the global playoff match against the Guinea national team, representing the African continent.
